7 Things to Know Before Your First Hot Mat Class
Published: 20 August 2026 | Tucson, Arizona
So you booked your first hot mat class at Fr!day Movement Downtown. Maybe you're a little excited, maybe you're a little "wait, how hot are we talking?"
Here's the good news: Hot Mat at Fr!day Movement is not a sauna with exercises thrown in. It's an infrared-heated, beat-driven mat Pilates class designed to get your heart rate up, deepen your stretch, and leave you dripping in the best way. The heat isn't there to punish you, it's there to work with your body.
We wrote this so you can walk in feeling ready instead of caught off guard. Here are the 7 things we wish everyone knew before their first class.
1. It's Not Like a Regular Mat Class
Regular or classical mat Pilates is controlled, low-impact, and steady. Heated Mat takes that same mat-based foundation and turns the intensity up. The infrared heat warms your muscles from the inside, which means deeper stretches, an elevated heart rate, and a serious sweat factor you won't get in a standard mat or stretch class. Think of it as mat Pilates' more intense sibling - same movement quality, a lot more output.
2. Hydrate Before You Arrive
This one matters more than people expect. Chugging half a water bottle in the parking lot isn't going to cut it once the heat kicks in. Start hydrating well before class, ideally earlier in the day, so your body actually has time to absorb it. And bring a water bottle into the room with you.
3. What to Wear
Breathable, sweat-wicking fabric is your best friend in this class. Unlike our Reformer classes, which require grip socks, Hot Mat doesn't require socks at all (curious why Reformer is different? check our FAQ page for the full breakdown). Mats are provided, so you don't need to bring your own, but we do recommend bringing a mat towel and a separate sweat towel. Want to add some extra burn? Ankle weights are available for purchase at the studio.
One more thing: don't layer up. The room does the warming for you, and you'll heat up fast.
4. Arrive Early
Doors open 10 minutes before class starts, and we ask everyone to arrive at least 10 minutes early to get settled, grab your mat and towel, and find your spot before things kick off. Because of how the room and heat are set up, we aren't able to accommodate late arrivals, so plan your day accordingly.
5. Modifications Are Always Welcome
This class is genuinely for everyone, whether you've been doing Pilates for years or this is your first class ever. Our instructors are there to coach you through modifications in real time, and there is zero shame in taking a move down a notch, especially on your first go. Ask, adjust, and make the class work for your body. That's the whole point. If you've been searching for beginner-friendly Pilates near you, this is exactly the kind of all-levels class that welcomes a first-timer to just drop in and try it. We created our 3 class intro package just for you, for $49 you can experience 3 different mat Pilates styles or you can switch it up and try our reformer or strength studios!
6. The Room Will Be Hot, That's the Point
The room will be hot, not just "warm." If you're picturing a cozy 80 degrees, recalibrate, this is a heated class, and it's built to feel like it. That heat is exactly what makes the stretching deeper and the sweat real. If you are looking for a warm class our classical mat is for you! If heat just isn't your thing, no hard feelings. Our Restore Mat class gives you all the mat Pilates benefits without the temperature.
That said, hot doesn't mean unbearable, and it definitely doesn't mean you have to push through at 100% the entire time. If it starts to feel like a lot, you don't need to leave the room. Drop down, breathe, take a beat, and rejoin the class whenever you're ready. Our instructors are trained to help first-timers pace themselves, and staying in the room for the full class, even with breaks built in, is completely normal and encouraged. You're not failing the class by pausing, you're doing it right.
7. You'll Want to Come Back
The post-class high is real. Between the music, the energy in the room, and the endorphins hitting once class wraps, most people leave already thinking about when they can book their next one. And yes, we make sure you're taken care of at the finish line, including our lavender-scented cooling towels waiting for you at the end. It's a small touch, but it makes a difference after a class like this.
